Chapter 7

Ginger got her first view of Malta from the air as their plane flew in for a landing on the archipelago. She had to do a doubletake, because the absolute splendor of the place told her it couldn’t possibly be real. In all her years of traveling, she’d not gone to many tropical locations. Perhaps that was why glimpses of the capital, Valletta, gave her a feeling of culture shock. Of reality-shock. Surely what was below her was something out of a fantasy instead of a real location. It was a painting, a dream.

Greek and Roman influences were everywhere in the architecture, with every building in sight -from the cathedral to the littlest of shops- having a dome, or an arched entrance, or a pair of Corinthian columns. Limestone and polished marble facets caught the strong sunlight, refracting it. Impossibly blue waters ran right up against all of it.

Ford peered around her and out the plane window. “It’s wonderful, isn’t it?”

“Is it even real?”

He chuckled and kissed her cheek. That irritated her for some reason. It made her feel like a child, like someone he had to protect. She’d gotten along just fine without him for years, thank you very much.

“It’s real,” he said. “I’ve visited before. Not during Christmas, though. It’s supposed to be one of the best places for celebrations.”

She made a noncommittal sound in response. She wasn’t sold on the idea.

Ford sighed and leaned his head against hers. “I can’t wait to find a good spot and get some painting done.”

That made her stomach twist. “And what am I supposed to do while you paint?”

Ford looked a bit surprised, like he hadn’t thought of that. Before, they had both been on separate trips and could do as they pleased, either meeting up or spending time apart. This time they had come together. They had come together, but here Ford was acting like she could go off and do whatever she wanted. What she’d wanted to do was spend time with him.

Is that not on the table anymore?

Ford smiled and shook his head. “Right. That was a bit dumb of me, wasn’t it?”

She wondered what he was referring to. Was it dumb that he’d forgotten about her,’ or was it dumb that he’d assumed he could get time away from her?

Ginger was really second-guessing this whole thing now. They should have gone their separate ways. They shouldn’t have pushed their luck by continuing to see each other, when they could have parted with fond memories.

“Are you okay?”

“Maybe a bit airsick,” she lied.

A shadow of concern crossed his face. He picked up her hand in his and rubbed his thumb over the spot on her wrist where her pulse was. “I’ve heard this helps with it. Or was that seasickness?”

The tenderness of it confused her. He kept giving her these mixed signals.

With a crackle, their pilot came on over the speaker system, telling everyone onboard they would be landing in a few minutes. He gave the usual talk about not getting up until the plane had come to a full stop and wished them all a happy holiday.
